Stray dogs may have a difficult time adjusting to domestic life, especially if they were abruptly introduced to a new owner. Fortunately, it is not hard for them to adjust to a new environment.
This story’s primary character is a dog named Jindol. He currently lives with a middle-aged Korean couple with two other pets. However, he prefers to remain alone on the veranda. His owners are unable to approach him or even touch him when he does that.
Only when his owners are outside the house does he eat. They must leave food for Jindol before going for a walk or before running any errands. This routine has remained unchanged for some time, and they have yet to determine what to do next.
Jindol was once a stray dog who frequented a park near his owner’s residence. He was sociable and enjoyed interacting with other canines in the park. Unfortunately, not all pet owners were kind to him.
Jindol was captured with the aid of a tranquilizer. Vaccinations and grooming were done on him while he slept. When he awoke, he was already inside the couple’s residence. His current behavior is, therefore, understandable.
A specialist in animal behavior named Chan Jong assisted the owners of Jindol. He examined the dog’s reaction when he invaded his personal space. In addition, he requested that one of the owners sit on the opposite side of the veranda.
Jindol felt uneasy and eventually entered the home. This was a positive outcome for the initial training steps. Next, the couple was instructed to walk around the house with their hands in their pockets.
The dog felt gradually less threatened and was eventually able to lie down inside the house. He didn’t get up even if someone walked near him. After that, it was time for the last step.
A corner of the house was used to confine the dog. One of the owners joined him in the confined space. He sat down with the dog and gradually extended his hand until he could pet Jindol. From then on, Jindol felt more at ease around his owners.
