70 people in Idukki, India terribly perished when a huge landslide occurred. Rescue teams were sent to the area immediately to look for survivors. While going over the site, they noticed a distraught dog frantically running around a spot near the river. She barked repeatedly, seemingly asking for help.
As it turned out, the canine was the pet of a two-year-old girl who was buried under heavy rocks along with her mother. The dog, named Koovi, stayed with her owners for days, waiting for help from anyone. When she saw the rescuers, the loyal pet guided them to where the little girl was.
Alone
Without her family, Koovi was now alone and homeless. None of their neighbors who survived wanted to take her. But her show of loyalty would change all that.
Ajith Madhavan, a trainer with the Kerala police dog squad, heard about the faithful pooch, and he felt sad she was about to become a stray. He went to the village affected by the landslide and looked for Koovi. The kind trainer found her in a row of remaining surviving homes sitting alone.
Ajitch called out the dog’s name, and she came walking toward him. Koovi laid her head on the man’s lap and shared her grief. She looked very lonely, and the villagers said the pooch refused to eat anything.
Permission granted
The authorities evacuated everyone out of the area as it was still dangerous to stay there. Sadly, no one was taking Koovi. Ajitch didn’t want to leave the dog behind and even wanted to adopt her. But before he could do that, he had to get the permission of the authorities.
Ajitch entrusted the lonely dog to another rescue member who had to stay behind. When he finally secured permission a couple of days later, the good-hearted guy went back and took Koovi home. She may have lost her family, but she won’t be living her life alone.
