Dogs have been used in the military ever since ancient times. Back then, they were often used as attack dogs to disrupt enemy lines. In modern warfare, military working dogs have numerous important roles, such as detecting bombs, enemies, and assisting with assaults.
In the United States military, war dogs are trained and owned by the Department of Defense. They are trained to function in dangerous environments and also to follow the commands of their handlers. A dog named Szultan is a military working dog who was handled by retired Staff Sgt. Angela Lowe.
Staff Sgt. Lowe loved working with Szultan and it didn’t take a lot of time for her and Szultan to develop an unbreakable bond. However, Staff Sgt. Lowe retired from the military after years of service due to injuries. Szultan remained the property of the Department of Defense and was used as a war dog up until his retirement.
Eventually, Staff Sgt. Lowe got a call informing her that Szultan was going to retire. She knew she needed to bring him home but was unable to drive to Joint Base Charleston to get him. She decided to get help by contacting a rescue organization called Mission K9 Rescue.
Mission K9 Rescue aims to find homes for retired military working dogs. They have been responsible for reuniting countless military working dogs with their handlers. As soon as they heard from Staff Sgt. Lowe, they went into action and retrieved Szultan from the base to reunite him with his former handler and trainer.
When Staff Sgt. Lowe was finally reunited with Szultan in her home, she was at a loss for words. She couldn’t believe that Szultan was finally home. Szultan also recognized his former handler and trainer that he became completely relaxed around her.
Now, Szultan can spend the rest of his days as a pet. He’s finally able to enjoy his retirement with his new family in his new forever home. Here’s a video featuring Szultan getting reunited with Staff Sgt. Lowe.
