Rex is a two-year-old German Shepherd that lives with his owners in Renton, Washington. His best friend is Javier Mercado, a 16-year-old young man who dotes on his pet a lot. The teenage boy spends a lot of moments playing with his pet, amused by his happy-go-lucky demeanor.
The dog might be friendly, but when the time came, he showed that he was a fierce protector and would risk his own life to save his young owner. His bravery made him a local hero, garnering a lot of praise for the dog.
Home invaders
Javier and Rex were alone in their home when they heard someone breaking into their house. The lad took a peek downstairs and saw several armed men walking inside. Fearing for his safety, the teenager ran towards the closet in his room and hid inside.
Rex, on the other hand, confronted the home invaders. He seemed to want to keep the men away from his best friend. The suspects were stunned to see the dog and quickly fired multiple shots.
The German Shepherd got hit three times. One went to his stomach, while the other two hit his leg, breaking his bone.
Survivor
The dog was soon rushed to the hospital as cops were called during the commotion. The dog underwent surgery and stayed in confinement for observation. He was sent home three days after the incident and expected to recover fully.
The story of his bravery and survival spread like wildfire, and residents of their local community were relieved to hear that the dog was doing better.
Sadly, the dog’s family was burglarized again while they were looking after the dog at the hospital. They don’t have enough resources to continue his treatment and therapy. They have raised a fundraiser to help them move out of their old home and continue Rex’s treatments.
