Ermioni, a co-founder of DAR Animal Rescue, together with some of her colleagues, went out to bring food to some homeless dogs when a dog by the side of the busy road caught her attention. It was impossible for her to do nothing so she and her friends pulled over. She hurriedly got off the car and slowly approached the dog.
Terrified and confused, the pup walked away and kept its distance. It didn’t know what the rescuer wanted so it avoided her at all costs. But when it got a whiff of the tasty treat she had in her hand, it slowly and carefully walked toward her.
The rescuer instantly noticed that the pup was wary of people so she made sure to gain its trust. She was patient and she held back until she saw the perfect opportunity to try and touch it for the first time. And several minutes later, she was able to carry it in her arms and into her car.
Ermioni and her colleagues asked around and learned that the dog, now Krispy, showed up in the neighborhood about a year ago. She was friendly and adorable so people started to feed her. And before long, she became the neighborhood stray dog that everyone loved.
Several individuals and various families aimed to help the dog but they all failed to catch her. No matter what they did, she just didn’t find any reason why she should trust them. Experienced rescuers were also unsuccessful because no amount of food lured her toward them.
Krispy lived sufficiently because the kind neighbors regularly fed her. But when Covid-19 broke out and people were no longer permitted to step foot outside their homes, she started to eat less and less. And soon, she went for days without eating.
The dog evaded rescue for quite a while but on the day Ermionni came, it realized it had no other choice but to accept her help. So instead of running away, it gathered all the courage it had and approached her.
Krispy was so unsure of the change that occurred in her life. But when, at last, she figured out that being in a home was way better than sleeping on the streets, she started to relax and decided to simply enjoy her new life.
