Doris, head rescuer of the nonprofit organization Bruno Project St. Lucia in the Caribbean, received a distraught call from her friend that needed her immediate response. Apparently, there was a momma dog that was rejecting her puppies. Whenever the little ones tried to nurse off of her, she pushed them away.
Sure, the situation sounded bad but Doris knew there was a reason behind it, or maybe, her friend simply overreacted. She went to see where the dogs were and she realized that the mom, now Kate, did what she did for the saddest reason.
Kate was all skin and bones and she was in the worst shape. She had given everything she could to her puppies, BB and Bean, and she had nothing more to offer them. She wanted to make sure they can survive on their own, which was why she wanted to wean them off and make them more independent.
The rescuer wasted no time and rushed the furry family to the vet for medical care. On their way, Bean, the healthier pup among the two, nursed from his momma and Kate had no choice but to feed him because she had nowhere to run. BB, meanwhile, was sick like his mom and he needed intensive care.
Poor BB fought for his life because he wanted to live. Sadly, about an hour later, his heart slowed down until it completely stopped. He was too weak to survive.
The momma dog felt much better within five days, but she no longer wanted to look after Bean. They had to be separated because she snapped when he tried to latch on to her breasts. It was for the best, after all.
Bean continued to his foster home as soon as he left the hospital. He was so tiny compared to his foster dog siblings. He weighed two pounds at the age of six weeks but he acted like he was a huge dog.
Two months since their rescue, Kate and Bean were ready to start fresh. They joined their new families and they couldn’t be any happier. in their forever homes.
