Animal cruelty is not just a story we read on the Internet. It’s a very real issue and a lot of dogs suffer from abuse and they are also forced to live with the pain of the abuse for the rest of their lives. Yet, at the same time, it’s also amazing to see the resiliency of these dogs and still enjoy life despite what they have experienced.
One example of that was a six-year-old Labrador Retriever-Shepherd mix named Porkchop. His owner just died and for days, he lived outside wandering through the neighborhood. Luckily, he had been rescued by a shelter in Carbondale, Illinois. Then he was sent to a partner shelter in Chicago named One Tail at a Time which had a very good adoption program.
He got a foster mom who took care of him while the shelter looked out for any possible family who would like to adopt him. One time, his foster mom was concerned that he had some urinary issues so she had him checked by a vet. And what they saw in his x-ray literally stunned them.
It turned out that he had been shot multiple times by a BB gun and there were over 50 BBs lodged inside him. Everyone was horrified at the level of abuse that Porkchop had been through. Yet when you look at him, it was like this dog never suffered through anything.
Thankfully, according to the vet, Porkchop didn’t need to have the BBs removed as they were not harming him anymore.
The shelter shared his photo on their Facebook page alongside an image of his x-ray. His story touched many hearts and at the same time, they were also amazed at how resilient he was in the face of all of the pain. And this inspired an outpour of love from donations to food and treats that made Porkchop feel loved.
Truly, Porkchop was a living example of how to live life to the fullest amidst all of the bad things in the world.
