When Capone first arrived at the Ionia County Animal Shelter, the local municipal shelter in Michigan, he was a bubbly and energetic pup that captured everyone’s heart. It wasn’t difficult to find a family for the then five-year-old Staffordshire Terrier mix. But sadly, things changed when he was returned a year after because he had a difficult time getting along with any other dog in their house.
The once happy and playful dog became reserved and depressed. He felt betrayed by the family that he loved. And his emotional problems became even worse when he saw that all of his shelter mates found their forever homes and he was left all alone.
The last kennel
According to Carly Quinn, the director of the shelter, Capone was so depressed that he stopped eating. It was difficult getting him to eat something and they had to resort to various ways to get him fed. He lost quite a lot of weight in the process. Carly said that his loss of appetite was a symptom of his broken heart.
Being rejected took a big toll on him. So he became very attached to the shelter staff because they were the only ones he truly trusted. Capone would always be right next to one of the staff, and he needed to have physical context with them. It was as if he was scared that they would run away.
There came a point that Capone was the last dog left in the shelter. All kennels were empty except for his. The staff felt sorry for him and exerted all their efforts to get him adopted.
Available
They frequently posted his picture on their Facebook page to let people know that Capone was available. At the same time, they wanted to make sure that he goes to a house with no other pets. This time, if Capone was going to be adopted, it had to be for good.
A few weeks after, a couple answered the call. They had seen his pictures and have read his story. They have fallen in love with him and decided to take him home. And when the day came, every eye in the shelter had tears.
They were so happy to see Cap[pne finally get a new home. Especially when they received a picture of the dog, smiling as he slept on his new bed.
