In 2016, residents of the city of Houston evacuated their homes because of the rising floodwaters. Heavy rains continued to pour for several days, causing panic, massive property damage, and even multiple deaths. Tens of thousands of families fled the area, and sadly, many dogs were left behind.
Aside from saving the people trapped inside their homes, the emergency responders also rescued pets. Some were inside their dog houses, while others were chained in the yard. They were left helpless to free themselves and were in danger of drowning. The rescuers had to go through many homes and properties to save these dogs.
Heroic duo
As there were not enough people, or equipment, to cover the massive flooded area, the rescuers feared that they really might not be able to save all the animals. They were, of course, prioritizing the residents. Thankfully, some people stayed behind and helped with the rescue operations.
A father and son duo coordinated with the responders and told them that they would be going around to save the dogs. The two brave men went on several trips with their boat around their flooded community for one whole day. They entered yards, climbed inside windows, and forcibly opened cages.
The animals were visibly grateful when they were taken into their boat. All in all, they saved more than 40 dogs.
Temporary shelter
The rescued creatures were turned over to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Brazoria County. All the animals were placed in a temporary shelter on higher grounds. The local shelter posted photos of all the pets placed under their care on social media. They urged the owners to retrieve their animals to free up more shelter space for other abandoned pets.
Thanks to the bravery and concern of kind individuals, these animals were spared from death and returned to their families.
